The original definition of “above the fold” related to the upper-half of the front page of your daily newspaper. Important “newsworthy” articles were reserved for this portion of the paper because they were featured front and center.

Today, the phrase remains true for newspapers, but it has been repurposed for websites. “Above the fold” refers to webpage content that is visible without scrolling. There is a stipulation. If your monitor is high resolution and your browser is expanded to fit that resolution, then you will see more content “above the fold” than someone who has a low-resolution monitor.

This is an example of what clix.co looks like "Above the Fold".

The example above is clix.co above the fold.

Posts

Posts are entries listed in reverse chronological order on the blog home page or on the posts page if you have set one in Settings  Reading. If you have created any sticky posts, those will appear before the other posts. Posts can be found in the Archives, Categories, Recent Posts, and other widgets. Posts are also displayed in the RSS feed of the blog. You can control how many posts are displayed at a time in the Reading Settings. The URL for a post includes the date the post was published like this: http://blogname.wordpress.com/2008/11/30/post-title/

If you want your posts to appear on a page other than your home page, read this.

Pages

Pages are static and are not listed by date. Pages do not use tags or categories. An About page is the classic example. Pages can be displayed in the sidebar using the Pages widget, and some themes display pages in tabs at the top of the blog. If you have 50 pages and you use the Pages widget, then all pages will be listed all the time. The URL for a page looks like this:http://blogname.wordpress.com/page-title/

How many can I have?
There is no limit on the number of posts or pages you can have.

How do I post to a Page?

All posts will appear on the main posts page, but you can also display specific posts on category pages with our custom menus feature. If you want, you can change the default page for posts to appear by changing Settings  Reading in the Dashboard.  This will likely require changing your front page as well.

The Reading Settings control how your blog is displayed to visitors. You can access it via your Settings -> Reading page.

General Settings

The Front Page Display setting allows you to choose what content appears on your blog’s front page. You can choose to have your latest blog posts or a static page that you have created in the Pages section of your blog. (Your blog must have at least one static page for this setting to appear.)

By default, your front page is set to display your latest blog posts, but you can change it to a static front page. Using a static front page is handy if you want to use WordPress.com to create a website and use your front page as a landing page or to display a welcome message. (See also Post vs. Page.)

Front page displays

Blog pages show at most lets you choose how many blog posts are displayed per page. The default setting is 10 posts per page.

Setting a higher number of posts to display on each page can potentially impact load times on your blog, since you will be loading a lot more data with each page. The default setting is 10 posts per page to ensure fast load times.

Pages are static. They are a good way to publish information that doesn’t change much, like an About page.

In WordPress, you can write either posts or Pages. When you’re writing a regular blog entry, you write a post. Posts, in a default setup, appear in reverse chronological order on your blog’s home page. Pages are for content such as “About,” “Contact,” etc. Pages live outside of the normal blog chronology, and are often used to present timeless information about yourself or your site — information that is always applicable. You can use Pages to organize and manage any content.

There are two ways to create a new page.

At the top of your wordpress admin bar you will see a + New

Once the drop down menu appears, click on “Page” and you’ve created your page!

You can click Pages  Add New in your dashboard.

Or you can click on the name of your blog in the upper left corner of the admin bar and select New Page from the dropdown menu.

From there, you will need to determine a few things.

1) The title of the page
2) The content of the page
3) The template you want to use

4) Where this page should appear in your navigation. Is it a primary link or is it a link that should go under another one?

It is very easy in wordpress to change the menu navigation once you set it. For example, if you decide that your new page should be under a particular category and then later decide you want to make the page it’s own category, you can simple edit the “Attributes” of where you want that page to appear in your navigation.

After publishing a page, the module will look like this:

publish_page_update

Categories provide a helpful way to group related posts together, and to quickly tell readers what a post is about. Categories also make it easier for people to find your content. Categories are similar to, but broader than, tags.

Depending on the theme and widgets you have activated, categories can be displayed at the top or bottom of posts, on the individual post view, and/or in the sidebar. You can assign multiple categories per post (you must assign at least one), and categories can be organized hierarchically.

Within WordPress, posts are the entries that display in reverse chronological order on your home page. In contrast to pages, posts usually have comments fields beneath them and are included in your site’s RSS feed.

To create a post, first log in to WordPress. Then, either click on the “Posts” tab at the top left or hover over it and select “Add New.” (By default, “posts” should automatically go to the blog portion of your website. If this is not the case, you can change that by following these instructions.)

Now that you’re on the Add New Post page, you can start writing your blog post. Type your title and text in the appropriate boxes (make sure the “Visual” tab is selected). From here you can format the text as you like (just like in Microsoft Word).

You can save the post as a draft, or when you’re done, click the blue “Publish” button on the right. You can edit a published post at any time—instead of “Publish,” the blue button will say “Update.”

Now there are many more options. Using the boxes on the right, you can create tags and categories if you like. You can also use the WordPress SEO tool below the text box to control how the post will show up in a search engine.
