Meta description tags, while not important to search engine rankings, are extremely important in gaining user click-through from SERPs. These short paragraphs are a webmaster’s opportunity to advertise content to searchers and to let them know exactly whether the given page contains the information they’re looking for.

The meta description should employ the keywords intelligently, but also create a compelling description that a searcher will want to click. Direct relevance to the page and uniqueness between each page’s meta description is key. The description should optimally be between 150-160 characters.

Meta descriptions can be any length, but search engines generally truncate snippets longer than 160 characters. It is best to keep meta descriptions between 150 and 160 characters.

How long can a title tag be?
Typically a maximum amount of 70 characters will display in the search results. It is better to place the important keywords at the beginning of the title tag. When you do a search on Google and/or Bing, you will see your title tag appear at the top of your listing in the SERP. Each search engine uses different character counts to display, you will notice in the two graphics above that Bing (the bottom image) is displaying fewer characters in the title tag then Google does in this example.

Make sure your title tag is as relevant to the page content as possible in order to help the search engines choose the best page of your site that matches the users query.

301 Redirect: a URL redirection that forwards visitors from a specific webpage to another page. In this case, the “301” in 301 redirect communicates that the forwarding address has been permanently moved to the new URL.

This redirect is extremely important for new websites that are changing domain names, URL structure, and directory names. In this case, the redirect tells search engines that a webpage has been permanently moved and the value of that page should be transferred to the new page.

On-page optimization is a strategy that is considered to be one of two fundamental components of SEO (the other being off-page optimization), which is mentioned in our article, “What is SEO“. On-page optimization is a tedious and often times inglorious process. It can be done wrong. But when it is done correctly, on-page optimization has a major impact on your site’s rankings.

This process involves creating or reinforcing relevance. Our job is to tell Google and other search engines that your site makes the most sense for a particular query. This subject could be discussed for hours, but to make a rather long explanation short, on-page optimization is the equivalent of the architecture of your home:

  • Your coding is the foundation
  • The structure of your home is dictated by your organization
  • Your content is your home’s furniture, carpeting, etc. It is the information that you provide, the products you sell and/or the services you render through your website

On-page optimization is primarily applied to:

  • Content
  • Coding

As mentioned earlier, on-page optimization can be done incorrectly. Examples of incorrect on-page optimization include:

  • Keyword stuffing
  • Pasting in duplicate content (plagiarism)
  • Redirecting high pagerank sites to your domain to pass value
  • Hiding internal or external links via CSS or
    <!–
    tags

The above list can go on and on, and there are plenty of “SEO companies” that implement strategies listed above to try and manipulate search spiders. At the end of the day, SEO is not manipulation, but rather steering. We’re steering Google and other search engine’s spiders to your content because we are creating or reinforcing your relevance.
